Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.
The first recorded use of the term upcycling was by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in an interview by Thornton Kay of Salvo in 1994.[1]
We talked about the impending EU Demolition Waste Streams directive. "Recycling," he said, "I call it downcycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is upcycling where old products are given more value not less." He despairs of the German situation and recalls the supply of a large quantity of reclaimed woodblock from an English supplier for a contract in Nuremberg while just down the road a load of similar blocks was scrapped. In the road outside his premises, was the result of the Germans’ demolition waste recycling. It was a pinky looking aggregate with pieces of handmade brick, old tiles and discernible parts of useful old items mixed with crushed concrete. Is this the future for Europe?

DIY wide angle lens DIY Bathroom

DIY wide angle lens

Instead of working like I should I built an almost-fisheye lens for my camera.

I’ve been dreaming of a fisheye lens for some time. However, I am poor. Today I found this Flickr group. Then this tutorial. While I started planning to go to the local Conrad hardware store to pick up a "Türspion", I found this tutorial

I had some scrap glasses lying around, but unfortunately I am nearsighted, not farsighted. But maybe my glasses would also make a nice effect? I tore apart the glasses and taped together the two lenses with masking tape, then mounted them on a toilet paper roll that fit nicely onto my camera’s lens, and here is the result. I guess it’s more wide angle than fisheye, but it has some nice bulging distortion.

I’m transforming my daughter’s room into a Candy shop theme and have been trying to dream up ideas to make a variety of candy peices… I will be sharing some things I have created along with how they are done. For anyone interested.

Things you Need:

1. Variety of colored round plastic plates. If you can find ones with circles it enhances the lollipop effect. (Found these at Big Lots)

2. A Pack of dowels

3. Acrylic paint and a brush

4. Cellophane gift bags with twisties (you can also use cellaphone wrap)

5. Glue gun and glue sticks

1. Paint around each dowel to create a striped effect. Let Dry.

2. Hot glue wooden dowel to plastic plate.

3. Place lollipop in cellophane bag (or wrap) and tie a twistie around it.

Some other uses:
* Favors at a baby shower or birthday party

DIY – 365/035 DIY Bathroom

DIY - 365/035

Today was a day for DIY and jobs around the house. I unblocked the plug; fixed the wobbly tap; unjammed the dodgy window lock; Hung the new mirror; moved the old mirror to the hall and hung it; and put the primer and undercoat on the bathroom door. Miss M was very pleased with the work on her otherwise very nice house :)

I do like being of use :)
